William Slocum Groesbeck

U.S. Congressman, Attorney. Born in Kinderhook, New York, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio with his family in 1816 when he was a child. He attended Augusta College in Kentucky and graduated from the law department at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1835. He was admitted to the bar in Ohio the following year and practiced as an attorney in Cincinnati. A member of the Democratic Party, he was a delegate to the Ohio State Constitutional Convention in 1850 and 1851 and was appointed as commissioner to codify the laws of Ohio in 1852. He also served in the Ohio Legislature. Elected to represent Ohio’s 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1857 to 1859. While a member of Congress, he was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Groesbeck was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1858. In 1861, he was a member of the Peace Convention to prevent civil war in Washington D.C. He was elected to the Ohio Senate and served from 1862 to 1864 and was later a delegate to the Union National Convention at Philadelphia in 1866. He was on the defense counsel as a lawyer for President Andrew Johnson at Johnson’s impeachment trial in 1868 and was given substantial credit for defeating the President’s removal from office. In 1872, he represented the Independent Liberal Republican Party as a Presidential elector and received one electoral vote for Vice President in the election. He was a delegate to the International Monetary Conference in Paris, France in 1878. Groesbeck, a prominent and wealthy citizen in Cincinnati, died at his residence in O’Bryonville in 1897 when he was 81 years old. His younger brother,  John Groesbeck, was a Colonel during the Civil War. His sister,  Olivia Augusta Groesbeck Hooker, was the wife of Union Civil War Major General,  Joseph Hooker.
