Viredo Espinosa (Viredo Espinosa)
Exiled cuban painter born in Regla, and member of the “Group of Eleven”, which marked the emergence of abstract expressionism in Cuba. He was marginalized by the revolutionary government after refusing to sign the necessary political form to join the National Association of Painters, Sculptors and Recorders established in 1959, so that he was denied access to work and materials for years. He went to the United States in 1969, in one of the “freedom flights”. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including an acknowledgment of the House of Representatives of the United States and “La Palma Espinada” by Cuban-American Culture Institute, among others. He donated artwork to raise funds for various charitable causes, thereby received recognition from the California State Assembly for his services to the community. (bio by: Errete)
