Actress. Born in the village of Barvikha outside of Moscow, she was one of the Soviet Union’s most successful and decorated film stars. She made her film debut in the 1925 motion picture “The Tailor from Torzhok,” and remained active in the film industry until the mid 1960s. Her notable film credits include: “The House on Trubnaya” (1928), “The Living Corpse” (1929), “Love and Hate” (1935), “The Revolutionists” (1936), “A Member of the Government” (1940), “The Artamanov Affair” (1941), “No Greater Love” (1943), “Theft” (1944), “Marriage” (1944), “Dawn Over Moscow” (1950), “Mother” (1955), “Among Good People” (1962) and “An Easy Life” in 1964. She was named the People’s Artist of the USSR in 1949, and a four time Stalin Prize winner in 1941, 1943, 1947 and 1951. She was also the recipient of two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, two Orders of the Badge of Honor, the Order of Lenin, and Hero of Socialist Labor in 1976. Diagnosed with breast and brain cancer during the last decade of her life, she spent much of her final years appearing on Russian radio, as a character actor.  (bio by: Nils M.
