Tobias Spengler (Tobias Spengler)
Born in Germany, Spengler was one of the pioneer brewers in St. Louis. He was apprenticed to a soap manufacturer before coming to the U.S. In 1852 he came to Belleville, Illinois & established a small soap manufacturing company. He decided to move across the river to St. Louis in 1856 & purchase a brewery which had previously been operated by his brother-in-law. His son & his son-in-law later became associated with the brewery & it was operated as a copartnership until 1886, when it was incorporated at the Bremen Brewing Company, with Tobias becoming president. Two years after his death the plant became a part of the extensive system of breweries purchased by a wealthy English syndicate in St. Louis.
