Restaurant Chain Founder. Born in Tacoma, but raised in Seattle, he was a tank driver with Patton’s Third Army during World War II. Upon his discharge, he returned to Seattle and bought an old downtown hotel which had a small restaurant. In 1964, he opened the first Black Angus in Seattle and saw the chain eventually grow to more than 120 restaurants across 19 states. The chain was sold in 1972, but Anderson stayed on to run it before retiring in the mid-1980s. In 2010, he took over a defunct Black Angus outlet in Rancho Mirage and turned it into Stuart’s Steakhouse. He died at his home from complications of lung cancer. (bio by: Louis M.)
