Stan Freberg

Voice Actor, Comedian, Author. He was a composer, singer, actor, author, comedian and advertising executive whose career spanned eight decades. In 1944, he went to work at Warner Brothers doing voices in a cartoon called ‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fala’. Often teamed with Mel Blanc, they performed in pairs and Freberg did solo voice work for such cartoon characters as Dumb Dog and Pete Puma. He did voice acting for Walt Disney Productions in ‘Lady and the Tramp’ (1955) and also provided the voice of Sam in the Academy Award-nominated short ‘Mouse and Garden’ (1960). In the 1950s, he began to record musical parodies, including ‘Wun’erful Wun’erful’, ‘Try’ and ‘St. George and the Dragonet’. His recordings were so popular that he landed his own radio program in 1954, ‘That’s Rich’, and three years later, he hosted ‘The Stan Freberg Show’ on CBS Radio. In 1959, he won a Grammy Award for ‘The Best of the Stan Freberg Shows’. He began acting on-screen in the comedy ‘Callaway Went Thataway’ (1951), costarred with Mala Powers in ‘Geraldine’ (1953) and had a non-speaking role in ‘It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World’ (1963). On television, he provided voices and was a puppeteer for Bob Clampett’s puppet series, ‘Time for Beany’, a triple Emmy Award winner in 1950, 1951 and 1953. He made made frequent guest appearances on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’, as well as other variety shows and even had his own ABC special, ‘Stan Freberg Presents the Chun King Chow Mein Hour: Salute to the Chinese New Year’. Other television roles included ‘The Monkees’ and ‘The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.’. He pioneered satire in advertising by injecting humor into commercials, and would go on to win 21 Clio awards for his advertising campaigns.
