Actress. Shannon Bolin will be remembered for originating the role of ‘Mrs. Meg Boyd’ in the successful Broadway production “Damn Yankees” (1955 to 1957). Born Ione Shannon Bolin, she studied at Wesleyan University and later the University of Maryland, prior to working as a teacher and at the US Department of Justice in Washington. After choosing to pursue a career in entertainment, she took singing lessons and gravitated towards radio, where she became a successful vocalist who received her own program “Songs by Shannon Bolin” during the 1940s. She moved on to stage work and performed operatic musicals and began her association with Broadway in the production “The Golden Apple”. Additionally, she studied acting under Elia Kazan and made her television debut in an episode of the program “Armstrong Circle Theatre”. She collaborated with her husband music composer Milton Kaye on the album “Rare Wine” (1955) and following the success of “Damn Yankees” which made a lasting impression on the legendary playwright George Abbott, she repeated her role of ‘Meg Boyd’, when the play became a motion picture adaptation in 1958. Among her other Broadway credits include “Only in America” (1959), “The Student Gypsy” (1963) and “Xmas in Vegas” (1965). She closed out the 1960s as a cast member in the off Broadway play “Promenade” (1969) and appeared in the film “If Ever I See You Again” (1978). (bio by: C.S.)
