Physicist. Born in Morrison, Illinois, he was a doctor of physics and electronics scientist. As a scientist, he made numerous momentous discoveries in the fields of electricity, optics and molecular physics. In 1923, he was honored with the Nobel Prize for Physics for his study of the elementary electronic charge and the photoelectric effect. He was the Director of the Norman Bridge Laboratory of Physics at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena and President of the American Physical Society. He was also Vice-President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American representative at the International Congress of Physics. His other awards included the Comstock Prize of the National Academy of Sciences, Edison Medal of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and Hughes Medal of the Royal Society of Great Britain. He died in San Marino, California.
