Rita Bekes (Rita Bekes)
Actress. Born in Debrecen, Hungary, she studied at the Academy of Theatre and Film Art in Budapest and made her stage debut in 1949. From 1956 to 1962 she was a member of the Attila Jozsef Theatre company, where she was praised for her performances of Shakespeare and Chekhov. Bekes appeared in four films by acclaimed director Istvan Szabo, memorably in the award-winning “25 Firemans Street” (1973), in which she played a housewife who risks her life to hide Jews from the Nazis during World War II. Her other screen credits include “Dialogue” (1963), “Father” (1966), “Forbidden Ground” (1968), “Love Film” (1970), “Budapest Tales” (1976), and “The Fifth Seal” (1976). She was the sister of actress Itala Bekes.
