Richard Kyle Fox (Richard Kyle Fox)
Newspaper Publisher. He is considered the “Father of the Tabloid”. Born in Ireland, he worked as a journalist and newspaper editor there until he immigrated to the United States in 1874. He took over as owner and editor of “The National Police Gazette” in 1877 and made it one of the most widely-read newspapers in its day, covering sports, theater, and crime. It eventually became known for its sensationalistic journalism, coupled with risqué pictures of showgirls. Through the “Gazette” Fox sponsored world championships in everything from wood chopping to water drinking to generate interest in his newspaper, and would featured articles on popular figures such boxer John L. Sullivan and Louis Cyr and Katie Sandwina, who were touted as the “world’s strongest man and woman”. (bio by: Ginny M) Family links: Spouse: Emma Louise Fox (1860 – 1940)* *Calculated relationship
