Businessman. Served as president of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway Company. His uncle, Philander Cable, was president of the Rock Island-Peoria Railroad. Ransom donated to Rock Island its waterworks pumping station. Philander’s son, Ben Cable, was a congressman from the Rock Island district for many years, after which time he spent some time living abroad. In 1891, while in France, he purchased a large bronze monument. This monument, designed and sculpted by Paul De Vigne, was cast in Brussels. The completed work now stands in the family plot and features a grief-stricken woman standing beside it, with a large bronze sarcophagus supported above. The 15,000 square foot Cable Mansion, 25 East Erie Street in Chicago, was designed by the prominent architect Henry Ives Cobb and built in the Richardson’s Romanesque style in 1886 as a residence for Ransom Cable. Its distinctive color is provided by the Northern pink buff dolomitic Minnesota limestone, from the Kasota-Mankato district, used in its construction. Since 1994, the mansion has served as the headquarters of Driehaus Capital Management, Inc. and the Driehaus Securities Corporation. (bio by: Warrick L. Barrett)
