Radio and Television Game Show Icon. He is probably best remembered as the producer for the radio and later television, game shows “Truth or Consequences” and “This is Your Life.” Born Ralph Livingston Edwards, he moved with his family to Oakland, California where he graduated from high school in 1931. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley, California, graduating in 1935 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. After failing to obtain a teaching job, he worked at a radio station in San Francisco, California before hitchhiking across the US to New York City, New York where he was able to find part time employment as a radio announcer. In 1938 he received his big break when he was hired by the Columbia Broadcasting System as an announcer for KFRC radio, working alongside future broadcasting icons Mel Allen and Andre Baruch. In March 1938 his “Truth or Consequences” first aired on NBC radio in New York City but later relocated to Los Angeles, California. In 1948 he created, produced, and hosted “This is Your Life” on NBC Radio. After television became a prominent media outlet in the early 1950s, the show moved to NBC-TV, running from 1952 until 1961. His other television game show productions include “About Faces” (1960 to 1961), “Name That Tune” (1974 to 1981), “The Cross-Wits” (1975 to 1980), “Knockout” (1977 to 1978), and “Bzzz!” (1996 to 1997). In 1981 he co-produced “The People’s Court.” He was instrumental in boosting the career of television game show host Bob Barker, who hosted “Truth or Consequences” from 1956 until 1974. During his career, he made a few film appearances, including “Radio Stars on Parade” (1945), “Bamboo Blonde” (1946), “Beat the Band’ (1947), “I’ll Cry Tomorrow” (1955), and “Sadistic Lover” (1966). In 1995 he was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. He died from heart failure at the age of 92. He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for his contributions to the radio and television industries. The Ralph Edward Service Award, named in his honor, is given annually by the Game Show Congress for those in the game show community who contribute to charitable causes.
