Peg Sellers (Peg Sellers)
Agnes Marks, the mother of Peter Sellers, was born in Hackney in North London, the daughter of Solomon Marks and his wife, Welcome Mendoza. She was a first cousin, three times removed, of famous boxer Daniel Mendoza (1764-1836), not, as is commonly believed, his great-granddaughter. When Solomon died, Welcome used his legacy to form a touring variety company, in which she appeared under the name Belle Ray. Agnes joined her mother on the stage, using the name Peg Ray, and it was at an engagement in Portsmouth, when she was singing “Roses of Picardy” in a revue called “More Splashes” that she met her husband, Bill Sellers.
