Actor. He is best known for his role of Alfred Pennyworth in the “Batman” film series. Born to British parents, he was educated at Wye Agricultural College before pursuing acting, as he studied at the Old Vic School. He marked his stage debut in 1936 and initiated his film career with the 1948 Vivian Leigh picture “Anna Karenina”. During the late-1950s, he became identifiable to movie audiences for a string of parts in several horror films including Hammer Films’ “Horror of Dracula” (1958), “The Phantom of the Opera” (1962), also “Horrors of the Black Museum” (1959) and “Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors” (1965), before inheriting the part of Alfred in Tim Burton’s film adaptation of “Batman” beginning in 1989. In addition, Gough made his mark on the Broadway stage beginning with “Compulsion” (1957 to 1958); he received a Tony Award for the comedy “Bedroom Farce” (1979) and earned a nomination with “Breaking the Code” (1988). In 1957, he won a BAFTA for Best TV Actor and received a BAFTA nomination with the film “The Go-Between” (1970). Among his noted TV credits include “The Avengers”, “Doctor Who” and the mini-series “The Mistral’s Daughter”.
