Married to director/producer/writer Joe May, Mia was one of Germany’s most prominent leading ladies in silent films at one point rivaling Asta Nielsen in popularity.  May began her career on the stage at 14 years of age, using the name Herma Angelot, which she changed to Mia May in 1902.  (At this time her husband liked the name so well, he changed his name to Joe May.)  She retired from films in 1924, upon the suicide of her daughter, actress Eva May.  Upon moving to Hollywood, Mia appeared in a handful of films and took on permanent retirement in 1943.  Actress in 27 films.
