Mary Gordon

Actress. She is best remembered for her role as Mrs. Hudson, Sherlock Holmes’ housekeeper, in the popular mystery films of the 1930s and 1940s, starring Basil Rathbone as the legendary sleuth. Gordon also reprised the role (again opposite Rathbone) in a radio series.  Her credits include “Our Dancing Daughters” (1928),  “Madame X” (1929),  “Frankenstein” (1931),  “Blonde Venus” (1932),  “She Done Him Wrong” (1933),  “The Bride of Frankenstein” (1935),  “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1935),  “A Damsel in Distress” (1937),  “Way Out West” (1937), “Angels With Dirty Faces” (1938),  “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939),  “The Hound of the Baskervilles” (1939),  “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” (1939),  “Kitty Foyle” (1940),  “How Green Was My Valley” (1941),  “The Pride of the Yankees” (1942),  “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (1947),  “Fort Apache” (1948),  “Mighty Joe Young” (1949),  and “The File on Thelma Jordan” (1950).  Gordon was born Mary Gilmour in Glasgow,  Scotland.  She came to the United States with a touring stage company and settled in Hollywood in 1925.  Short,  plump,  and kindly-faced,  with a heavy Scots accent,  she played assorted maids and landladies in some 280 films before her retirement in 1950.
