Actress. She was a popular sex kitten in 1950s French film features. Born Marie-Louise Jeanne Nicolle Mourer, she trained with Rene Simon, practiced her art in live theatre, and was first seen on the silver screen in 1941’s “The Corrupters”, though her first significant role was to be that of Micky in the 1943 “La femme aux loups”. Over her career she was to be seen in roughly 45 movies, variously billed as Marise Arley, Martine Carole, and Marie-Louise Maurer. Martine’s best known screen turn was to be one that required her to have dark hair, the title lead of Max Ophuls’ last film, the 1955 “Lola Montes” in which she co-starred with Peter Ustinov. Her other noted portrayals included Edmee in “Beauties of the Night” (1952), the title character of 1955’s romance “Nana” (with Charles Boyer), a tourist in “Around the World in Eighty Days” (1956), and the Countess Vitelleschi in Roberto Rossellini’s 1961 drama “Vanina Vanini”; she was last seen on screen as Martine Grant in 1967’s “Hell is Empty”. Martine’s personal life was turbulent complete with three failed marriages (a fourth ended with her death), drug abuse, at least one suicide attempt, and even a brief gangland kidnapping which was resolved with roses and an apology the next day. She died of a myocardial infarction possibly contributed to by substance abuse. Martine’s original grave in Pere Lachaise was desecrated after the press reported that she had been buried with her jewelry.
