Educator. She was one of the most distinguished African-American educators of the late 19th and early 20th century. First a teacher, later principal, then Master of the interracial Agassiz Grammar School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she was the first African-American woman to attain those positions in the state. She was also active in many clubs, including the Women’s Era Club, and was President of the League for Community Service in Boston.
