Margot Stevenson (Margot Stevenson)

Margot Stevenson

Actress. Out of a long and multi-faceted career she shall probably be remembered as Margot Lane on radio’s “The Shadow”. Raised in New York City, she made her Broadway debut in 1932’s “The Firebird”; over the years she was to amass around 20 credits on the Great White Way including “Venus Observed” and “The Barretts of Wimpole Street”, and was to be part of several original casts including those of George S. Kaufman’s “You Can’t Take It With You”, where she starred as Alice Sycamore, and “Stage Door”, in which she was Kendall Adams (both 1936). First seen on the silver screen in the 1934 short “Come to Dinner”, she had turns in over a dozen Hollywood features including 1940’s “Calling Philo Vance” and “Flight Angels”, “Valley of the Dolls” (1967) and the 1970 “Rabbit Run”. Miss Stevenson was a regular on several radio series including “The Fat Man” and “The Silver Theater”, though her most noted role was to be that of Margot Lane opposite a young Orson Wells in “The Shadow”, the character being named for her though she did not assume the role until 1938, Agnes Moorehead having been the original Margot in 1937. With the arrival of television, she was seen on the “Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse”, the “Hallmark Hall of Fame” and other fare of the day, while in London she appeared in West End productions of “Sweet Peril” and “The Seven Year Itch”. She last performed on Broadway in “The Royal Family” (1976) and earned her final credit with the 1983 television movie “How to Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days”. Miss Stevenson lived her final years in her native New York City; some sources give her birth year as 1914 or 1918, though several stated her age as 98 which would agree with the year listed above.
