Lydia Bruce

American Actress and Dancer. Born Lydia Slubowski, she began studying dance in her preteens and by her mid-teens, was invited by George Balanchine to join his junior dance company. As a young adult, she moved to Chicago to study acting at Loyola and at the Goodman Theater. After appearing in several stage productions, she moved to New York where she found a successful theatrical career and met her husband of nearly fifty years, actor Leon Stevens. In 1960, she was named “the most promising actress of the season” by The New York Times for her performance in ‘A Call on Kuprin’. In 1968, she landed the role of Dr. Maggie Powers on the NBC daytime drama ‘The Doctors’, a role that she would play until 1982. Among other series she appeared in were ‘Armstrong Circle Theater’, ‘Hawaii Five-O’, ‘Guiding Light’ and ‘Law & Order’. Bruce died of natural causes.
