Artist. Best known for his impasto portraits and nudes, he was considered by many as one of the greatest figurative painters of his era. The son of Austrian architect Ernest Freud and the grandson of famed psychotherapist Sigmund Freud, he fled his homeland of Germany with his family after the Nazis came into power and settled in England, becoming a British citizen in 1939. He was educated at the Central School of Arts and East Anglian School, the latter where he was mentored by Cedric Morris. During World War II, he served with the British Merchant Marines and experienced his first prominent displaying of work at the Lefevre Gallery in London during 1944. His “Interior in Paddington” (1951, which a friend of his posed for six months) received a place at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and earned Freud an Arts Council Prize at the Festival of Britain. In recent years, was identifiable to a later generation of art admirers for his portraits of supermodel Kate Moss (in the nude) and Queen Elizabeth II. A few years prior to his death, Freud’s works have fetched millions of dollars unprecedented for a living artist.
