Lewis Parsons Hobart

Architect. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Hobart studied briefly at the University of California Berkeley before travelling to Paris to study at l’École des Beaux Arts until 1903. Shortly after the devastating earthquake of 1906, he moved to San Francisco where he was prominent in the rebuilding of the city. Among his many projects in San Francisco during his career would be the University of California Hospital (1917), the Steinhart Aquarium (1923) and several other buildings of the California Academy of Sciences, Mills Tower (1931), and the Fleishhacker Zoo, which later became the San Francisco Zoo. In addition he also became known for designing mansions for some of the San Francisco Bay Area’s leading figures including William H. Crocker, George Cameron, Richard Tobin, and George Newhall. He is best remembered for being the original architect for San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, started in 1928 and completed in 1964.
