Attorney, Judge, Diplomat and Prosecutor. He graduated from Columbia College in 1932, and from Columbia Law School in 1935. He served a varied career including private practice. New York special assistant attorney general from 1936 to 1938. Deputy assistant district attorney of New York County from 1938 to 1941. U.S. District Court judge from 1954 to 1957 and United States Deputy Attorney General from 1957 to 1960. He was President of the New York State bar association from 1966 to 1967. He served as Deputy Head of the United States delegation to the Paris peace talks on Vietnam in 1969, with the rank of Ambassador. He was president of the American Bar Association from 1975 to 1976. In 1986 he was named the Independent Counsel to investigate misconduct in the President Ronald Reagan administration for the Iran-Contra affair. His investigation led to the convictions of former National Security Council member Oliver North and former National Security Advisor John Poindexter and other defendants. Walsh also brought indictments against former defense secretary Caspar Weinberger in 1992. Walsh submitted his final report in 1993. He was considered by a great number of people, to be a person of excellent character and had a exceptional work ethic.
