Katharine Cornell (Katharine Cornell)

Katharine Cornell

Actress.  She was born in Berlin.  Her family moved to the U.S. and she was raised in Buffalo New York. She married Guthrie McClintic in 1921 and they lived together until his death in 1961. However, it was well known in theatrical circles that the relationship was platonic as both were involved with others of their own sex. McClintic was a director and often directed Ms. Cornell. She was a brillant stage actress during the 1930’s and 40’s. Alexander Woolcott called her “The 1st Lady of the American Stage.” During her stage career, she and McClintic lived in at 23 Beekman Place in Manhattan. The fourth floor belonged to McClintic, the third floor to Ms. Cornell and the bottom two floors were shared.  Ms. Cornell died June 9, 1974 and was buried in Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard where she and her last partner Nancy Hamilton owned a home.
