Joyce Ballantyne Brand (Joyce Brand)

Joyce Ballantyne Brand

Artist. She was best known for her drawing of the “Coppertone baby” advertisement, in which a little girl is having her bathing suit tugged down by a puppy, exposing her tan line and her bottom. The model for the drawing was her daughter, Cheri Brand Irwin, who was 3 years old. According to Ms. Brand, she used her daughter as a model because she “worked cheap and was convenient.” She was also the artist responsible for the 1977 drawing of the “Pampers” diaper baby, which appeared in advertisements and on packaging. In later years, her artwork focused on fine art, including oil portraits of Jonathan Winters and Major General John Leonard Hines. (bio by: Clinton Hiley)
