Joseph L. Musso (Joseph L. Musso)

Joseph L. Musso

Restaurateur, co-founder of Musso & Frank Grill.  Opened in 1919 with partner Frank Toulet, it is steeped in Hollywood history, having been the hideout of a host of famous  celebrities from Hollywood’s elite, including movie stars, film directors and producers. In the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s, the golden years in Hollywood, the waiters served Mary Pickford, Greta Garbo, Edward G. Robinson, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Cesar Romero and many more.  Legend has it that Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, and Douglas Fairbanks raced each other down Hollywood Boulevard on horseback, the loser having to pick up the dinner tab.  The restaurant was also known for it’s clientele of legendary writers. The famous back room was home to William Saroyan, John Fante, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nathaniel West, William Falkner, Charles Bukowski, Raymond Chandler and Ernest Hemingway.  The restaurant survives today, much as it did in the beginning.
