John Howard Davies (John Howard Davies)
Child Actor, Television Producer and Director. The son of motion picture screenwriter Jack Davies, he found instant success as a child actor playing the title role in David Lean’s “Oliver Twist” (1948). This was followed by parts in the pictures “The Rocking Horse Winner” (1949), “Tom Brown’s Schooldays” (1951, title role) and “The Magic Box” (1951). After completing his education, Davies worked at such occupations as carpet salesman and city clerk, before returning to acting, finally arriving at the decision to no longer pursue a career as a performer. In 1966, he joined the BBC as a production assistant and advanced to producer two years later beginning with episodes from the TV series “Misleading Cases”. Davies went on to produce and direct episodes of such popular British TV programs as “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”, “Fawlty Towers”, “Good Neighbors”, “All in Good Faith”, “The Goodies” and “Mr. Bean”, among many others. He earned a BAFTA TV Award for an episode of “Fawlty Towers” in 1976 and received several more nominations. (bio by: C.S.)
