John Gillespie Bullock (John Gillespie Bullock)
Businessman. Born in Ontario, Canada, in the 1890s, he moved to Los Angeles, California and with Arthur Letts, set up a dry goods store. Since it was located on Broadway Street, they called it “Broadway” in 1907. The store prospered so they opened a second store which was managed by John Bullock and the new outlet was named “Bullock’s”. In 1923, Bullock bought out Letts’ interest and with business partner P.G. Winnett started a company which became the upscale specialty store chain Bullocks Wilshire department stores. At the time of Bullock’s death, the Bullocks Wilshire chain operated a full-line of exclusive department stores all across California. He died at age 62 in Los Angeles, California.
