John Adams Elder (John Adams Elder)
Civil War Artist. He won an academy prize at the famous art school in Dusseldorf, Germany. Instead of using part of his prize which was a trip to Rome, he returned to Fredericksburg to paint in a one-room studio at the old Exchange Hotel. The hotel later burned to the ground and he operated elsewhere. He was an artist for the Southern Punch Magazine. Some of his most famous paintings were “Appomattox”, “Jubal Early”, “Robert E. Lee” and many other notable Civil war heroes and battles. (bio by: Amanda Bishop Burns)
