Joan Francis (Joan Francis)
Actress. Born in 1920, she started her career in musical comedies and dramatic plays. Working in the repertory companies with actors like Doris Speed, Patricia Phoenix, Bernard Youens and Arthur Leslie, she honed her craft as an actress. In 1960 she tried out for the role of Elsie Tanner in Coronation Street but Pat Phoenix got the role. The following year she was cast as Elsie’s best friend Dot Greenhaugh and stayed till 1969. Joan appeared in the 1966 movie, Fahrenheit 451 as a telephonist. Failing health forced her to retire in the eighties, and she died on 22 November 1995, aged 75 in a South Manchester Nursing Home.
