Jessica Dragonette

Singer, Entertainer. Born in Calcutta, India, educated at Georgian Court Lakewood, New Jersey, she was invited to New York for singing lessons under the renowned teacher Estelle Liebling. Soon as a soprano, she thrilled audiences performing in operas and in Broadway shows. Merging into radio in the late 1920s, she was signed to NBC performing on the “Coca-Cola Hour”, “Cities Service Concert Series”, “Cities Service Show” and even appeared in several featured films. By 1938, she was awarded radio’s Star of Stars and during World War II, she became even more popular on American radio. She was awarded the US Treasury Silver Medal for selling war bonds and silver wings from both the Army and Navy for entertaining the troops. In the 1950s, she appeared on TV shows such as “Dragnet”, “Texaco Theatre”, “The Ed Sullivan Show” and David Gottlieb, the president of the leading pinball game manufacturer, hired her to appear on commercials promoting a pinball game called Dragonette. She died of a heart attack at age 80 in New York City and has a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Radio. (bio by: John “J-Cat” Griffith)
