Jelka Delius (Jelka Delius)

Jelka Delius

Painter. Born Jelka Rosen in born in Belgrade, Serbia, she was best remembered for being the wife of English composer Frederick Delius. Becoming a successful painter in her own rights, she studied and practiced art in Paris, exhibiting in the Salon des Indépendants. She met Delius in 1896, they married in 1903 and she inherited a modest fortune from her distinguished Schleswig-Holstein family. She remained devoted to Delius despite his many unjust personal affairs and after he became blind and paralyzed with third-stage syphilis, she gave up her work as an artist to care for him. After his death, she herself became ill with bowel cancer and contracted pneumonia a year later. She was taken by ambulance to Kensington, London, where she died at age 66.
