James “Big Jim” Fisk

Financier. One of the most prominent bankers and money men of the post-Civil War era, he teamed with fellow financier Jay Gould to corner the New York City, New York gold market in 1869. This attempt to consolidate the wealth in the hands of the two men resulted in the Financial Panic of 1869 (called “Black Friday”), and forced the federal government to release gold reserves to reduce the price of gold and stem the panic. Fisk was murdered by a former associate who had unsuccessfully tried to extort money from him over his business dealings. Ā Family links: Ā Spouse: Ā Lucy D.
