Henry Hayden Lannigan

Basketball Coach. Member of the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Known during his time as “the life and spirit of University of Virginia Athletics,” During his early years he excelled in track and field, defeated the Swedish fencing champion, and held for several year the world shot-put record. “Pop” Lannigan came to the University of Virginia in 1905 as associate director of athletics and remained an integral part of University sports until 1929. During his tenure he improved the track program and introduced boxing and basketball. In 1957 Henry Haden Lannigan, whose basketball teams won 290 of 380 games was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame. (bio by: S.G.
