Hank Greenspun (Hank Greenspun)
Newspaper Publisher, Real Estate Entrepreneur. He was a pivotal figure in Nevada politics and history. He started out as publicity agent for the fledgling Flamingo Hotel, operated by Ben “Bugsy” Siegel. In 1949, he bought a struggling newspaper, renamed it the Las Vegas Sun, and transformed it into an independent voice in the corrupt, mob-influenced town. The Sun courageously took on red-baiting Senator Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin during the height of the Communist scare in 1952, denouncing the lack of proof underlying McCarthy’s accusations. When McCarthy and his allies started to come after Greenspun, he effectively backed them off by infamously referring to McCarthy as “the queer that made Milwaukee famous.” Late in his career, he shifted his focus to real estate and was instrumental in creating Green Valley, the first master-planned community in Nevada. Green Valley transformed the city of Henderson from a gritty, run down mining town into the upscale bedroom community it is today.
