Actress. A model and part-time actress who mostly played herself, she is remembered as the wife of famed actor Jimmy Stewart. Born Gloria Hatrick in Larchmount, New York, she became a model and gave it up to marry and raise a family.  She was married twice, first to Edward Beale McLean, Jr. with whom she had two sons, Ronald and Michael; the marriage ended in divorce in January 1948.  She was then married in August 1949 to actor Jimmy Stewart, with whom she had two daughters, Judy and Kelly.  Jimmy would raise the two stepsons as if they were his own.  Her son, Ronald McLean, served as a First Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps, and was killed June 3, 1969 while in combat during the Vietnam War. He is buried next to her grave.   Her main focus in life was her husband and children, however, to further her husband’s acting career, she would play guest appearances on various television shows, usually as herself (Mrs. Jimmy Stewart).  She played herself in cameo roles in several episodes of the “Jack Benny Program” (1952 to 1964), and appeared several times, again as herself, on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson.  She also appeared on a television special in 1987 called “James Stewart:  A Wonderful Life,” which honored her husband, actor Jimmy Stewart.  The Stewart family lived on Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills, an area that was home to many of Hollywood’s top stars.  She was one of the few Hollywood types to plant and tend her own garden, and she would give the excess vegetables to Jimmy to take around to their neighbors.  She and her husband also owned a ranch in Hawaii, returning to it every year for vacation when time permitted, to manage cattle and a macadamia nut orchard. They planned to build a retirement home there, but Gloria died before the house could be built, and after Jimmy’s death in 1997, the family sold the ranch three years later.
