Gisele Freund

Photographer. She was born in Berlin, Germany. She became a political activist protesting the rise of Hitler’s National Socialism. In 1933 she fled Germany and moved to Paris with her camera. Later, she moved to Argentina and Mexico until the end of Second World War. She is remembered for her portraits of famous writers such as Francois Mauriac, Stefan Zweig, Walter Benjamin, Jean Cocteau, Louis Aragon, Jean-Paul Sartre, Henri Michaux, Andre Gide and James Joyce. She was a founding member of Magnum Photo Agency. In 1974 she published Photography and Society.  (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
