Gilbert Hilton Scribner (Gilbert Hilton Scribner)
Hon. Gilbert Hilton Scribner, Lawyer, author and former Secretary of State of New York. Republican member of the New York State Assembly, Westchester Co., first district in 1869 and in 1870 became Secretary of State, which office he held until 1873. Was President of the Belt Line Street Railroad of New York. Was a writer of note, among his writings was “Where Did Life Begin?” He also was a contributor to the Popular Science Monthly. A member of the New York Academy of Anthropology, the New York Geological Society, Sons of the American Revolution, Society of American Authors and of the Union League since 1866. He graduated from Oberlin College and began studying law in the office of Daniel B. Taylor of New York City. He was admitted to the bar in 1866. He was the son of Sewell B. Scribner, and the fifth cousin of the publisher Charles Scribner. He was married to Sarah Woodbury Pettingill Scribner who preceded him in death. There were six children born to the marriage.
