Educator, Reverend, mentor of prominent persons.  Born into a prominent New England family, Peabody was educated in England at Cambridge University. He returned to the United States and studied theology at an Episcopal seminary in Cambridge, MA. In 1882, he made a brief move to Arizona Territory, where he organized what is now the oldest non-Catholic church in that state: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Tombstone. Back in Massachusetts, Peabody co-founded the renowned private prepatory school, The Groton School for Boys, and served as headmaster there from 1884 to 1940. At Groton, he urged his privileged students to embrace their Christianity and help the disadvantaged populace. Among his students were Theodore Roosevelt’s son Quentin, Dean Acheson, Erastus Corning II, and W. Averill Harriman. The most famous man he mentored was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Peabody officiated at his marriage to Eleanor Roosevelt. Franklin D. Roosevelt later commented that Peabody’s influence meant more to him than that of any other person next to his father and mother.
