Entrepreneur. Tens of millions of North Americans grew up with his name, as part of his company’s iconic trademark, “Ronzoni Sono Buoni…Ronzoni is so good.”  But it all began in 1881 when Emanule Ronzoni immigrated to the United States with his parents from Italy.  After spending his teen years working at a macaroni factory on New York’s lower east side, at twenty-one Emanuel started a company along with some partners, which they named “Atlantic Macaroni Company.”  But in 1915 he struck out on his own, establishing “Ronzoni Macaroni Company” in Long Island City, Queens.  The company grew significantly during the period of the Second World War as this inexpensive, filling entrée became a staple in American homes.  Soon after the war, Emanuele retired, turning the company over to his son and namesake, Emanuele, Jr.  The company remained under family ownership until it was sold in 1984.  By that time, the products were distributed throughout North America, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.  Although there is not a single Baby Boomer who hasn’t heard the phrase, “Ronzoni Sono Buoni” Emanuele, Sr. never heard it…at least not as an advertising slogan.  The trademark was registered in 1965, nine years after Emanuele’s passing.  When Emanuele’s wife Maria passed away in 1947, her remains were brought to the receiving vault at Calvary Cemetery until a family mausoleum could be erected in Mt. Saint Mary’s Cemetery, where she was later transferred.  Many members of the Ronzoni family, including its patriarch, now rest therein.  Though now owned by New World Pasta, Ronzoni-branded products can still be found on the shelves of homes and supermarkets around the world, and the name Ronzoni is an historic part of the American lexicon.
