Elvire Popesco

Actress. Born in Bucharest, Romania, she was stage performer making her big screen film debut in “Independenţa României” (1912). In 1919, she became the artistic theatre director of the Excelsior Theatre, which she managed and then starred in the movie “Ţigăncuşa de la iatac” (1923). Moving to Paris, France, she was director of Théâtre de Paris (1956–65) and Theatre Marigny (1965–78). She also played in the movies “La Présidente”(1938), “Tricoche et Cacolet” (1938), “Ils étaient neuf célibataires” (1939), “Paradis perdu” (1940), “Austerlitz” (Gance, 1960) and “Purple Moon” (1960). At age 84, she played the leading role in “La Mamma” on the sage of the Théâtre de Paris. She died in Paris, France, at age 99. (bio by: John “J-Cat” Griffith)
