Astronaut. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, whom received flight training in Florida and Texas, following his graduation from West Point. He then spent 3-1/2 years in Germany with a fighter squadron, flying F-86’s and F-100’s. He was a Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California, in 1959 and was named as a member of the NASA Astronaut team in September 1962. He was pilot for Gemini 4, which was a 66-revolution, 4-day mission June 3 to 7, 1965 and made America’s first spacewalk during the mission. He was killed when the Apollo 1 command module had a flash fire on the launch pad. Named as one of the pilots of the AS-204 mission, the first 3-man Apollo flight, he was killed with Astronauts Virgil I. Grissom and Roger B. Chaffee in the Apollo spacecraft flash fire during a launch pad test at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and Edward H. White II Park in Fullerton, California is named for him.
