Ed Benedict

Cartoon Animator. Best known for designing the characters of “The Flintstones” cartoon series. He designed the look of Fred, Barney, Wilma and Betty as well as their houses and foot-driven cars. He was working for MGM, Universal and various other studios on cartoon shorts when, in the late 1950s, he joined Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera when they launched the Hanna-Barbera TV animation studio. He designed various characters for Hanna-Barbera’s first show “The Ruff & Reddy Show.” The cast of characters he brought to life at Hanna-Barbera are as widely known as they were colorful. As well as the Flintstones characters, he designed Yogi Bear, Quick Draw McGraw, Huckleberry Hound and others. Early in his career, he worked for another animation designer, Tex Avery. He designed various cartoon shorts and was the lead layout artist and designer on the “Deputy Droopy” shorts.
