Darryl Hayward Sly (Darryl Hayward Sly)
Professional Hockey Player. A native of Collingwood, Ontario, he played at the position of defense for six seasons (1965 to 1971) in the National Hockey League. He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Minnesota North Stars, and the Vancouver Canucks. His NHL career consisted of 79 games, 1 goal, and 2 assists. Besides the NHL, Sly was also a star player in the minor leagues playing for the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League from 1960 to 1973, the Iowa Stars of the Canadian Hockey League from 1969 to 1970, and the Barrie Flyers of the Ontario Hockey Association from 1971 to 1978 (of which he also coached for a year). As a member of the Rochester Americans, Sly ranked first with a total of 516 games played, and 51 goals among team defenseman. He is also third in in points, registering 183 in parts of 11 seasons. His best season with the Americans was 1962 to 1963 when he scored 16 goals and added 16 assists. He also played for Team Canada at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics helping them to win a silver medal. Sly retired from playing hockey following the 1977 to 1978 season. His honours include being named a member of the OHA-Jr. Second All Star Team in 1959, member of the WEC-A All-Star Team in 1961, member of the WHL SEcond All-Star Team in 1969, and as a member of the OHA-Sr. First All-Star Team in 1972, 1973, and 1974. He was also inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in 1986. He died from cancer in his hometown of Collingwood, where he had become a successful businessman in both real estate and as a car salesman. (bio by: K) Family links: Parents: Hayward L.
