With his civil engineer brother Matthew and Frederick Newton Gisborne, they worked on the project of for a telegraph across to Newfoundland from the US in 1854. Having secured all the practicable landing rights on the American side of the ocean, he with John W. Unsuccessful attempts to lay the cable were made in August 1857 and in June 1858, but the complete cable was done in August 1858. Thus on August 16, 1858, the first Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable system was officially opened when Queen Victoria sent President James Buchanan a message in Morse code.
