Commodore Perry Owens (Commodore Perry Owens)

Commodore Perry Owens

Folk Figure. C.P. Owens was the sheriff of Navajo County, Arizona on September 4, 1887 when he went to a house in Holbrook to arrest Andy Cooper. Cooper, whose real name was Blevins, was wanted in connection with the troubles associated with the Pleasant Valley War, a cattle range dispute sometimes called the Graham-Tewksbury feud. When Owens knocked on the door of the Blevins house, he was immediately fired upon by its inhabitants. Within the space of mere seconds, Owens fired only 5 shots, killing Cooper, Sam Blevins, Mose Roberts and wounding John Blevins. This gunfight, an example of single-handed law enforcement worthy of Hollywood, has been eclipsed by the more famous “Gunfight at the OK Corral” in Tombstone.  (bio by: George Bacon)  Family links:  Spouse:  Elizabeth Barrett Owens (1879 – 1945)
