Clyde Beatty (Clyde Beatty)

Clyde Beatty

Wild animal trainer, circus performer.  He left all Ringing interests at the end of the 1934 season, and joined out with owner-partners Jess Adkins and Zack Terrell with the new Cole Bros. Circus that winter, and opened with them for the season of 1935.  They added his name to the title for public appeal, and his name appeared in the title of every circus he was on thereafter.  He was on Cole Bros. & Clyde Beatty through the 1937 season.  When the Cole show closed early in 1938, he transferred to their 2nd unit, Robbins Bros.  Both titles went broke that season.  Beatty spent the entire 1939 season at George Hamid’s Steel Pier, in Atlantic City, and in December of that year opened his Clyde Beatty Jungle Zoo, in Ft. Lauderdale.  He became sole owner of the Clyde Beatty Circus in 1945, taking it out as a truck show.  In 1946, he took to the rails, and billed it as the Clyde Beatty Railroad Circus through 1956.   Under reorganization after bankruptcy, the title was changed for 1959 to a reversal of the 1935 name, and became Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus through the 2003 season.  Family links:  Parents:  Margaret Beatty Tong (1882 – 1970)
