Actress.  One of the silent screen’s most bewitching vamps.  She was born in San Francisco,  the daughter of an Australian rabbi who later served as a technical advisor on D.W. Griffith’s epic “Intolerance” (1916).  Myers made her acting debut as a slave girl in that film and stayed on at Triangle Pictures as a Griffith protege.  Moving to Universal in 1919,  the exotic,  raven-haired beauty made her mark in films as a dark seductress and went on to   vamp such top stars as Douglas Fairbanks,  Rudolph Valentino,  John Barrymore,  and John Gilbert.  Her quintessential role was as Iras in MGM’s “Ben-Hur” (1925);  draped in outlandish costumes,  she vigorously enticed both Messala (Francis X. Bushman) and the title character (Ramon Novarro).  Offscreen,  Myers’ intelligence and chic personal style gained her entry into elite 1920s Hollywood society.  She had a fine voice for talkies but because of her age was reduced to supporting parts and bits;  after 1934 her screen appearances were infrequent.  Among her 90 films are “All Night” (1918),  “The Kiss” (1921),  “The Love Pirate” (1923),  “Broadway After Dark” (1924),  “Babbitt” (1924),  “The Careless Age” (1929),  “Svengali” (1931),  “Pleasure” (1931),  “The Countess of Monte Cristo” (1934),  and “Lady for a Night” (1942).  From 1951 to 1952 she hosted “The Carmel Myers Show”,  one of American television’s earliest talk programs,  and later worked in real estate and marketed her own line of perfumes.  In 1976 Myers briefly returned to acting with two episodes of the TV sitcom “Chico and the Man” and a cameo in the feature “Won Ton Ton,  the Dog Who Saved Hollywood”.  She was a cousin of director  Mark Sandrich and photographer Ruth Harriet Louise, both of whom are also buried at Home of Peace Memorial Park.
