Berta Gersten

Actress. Born in Cracow, Poland, she was an acclaimed leading lady in the Yiddish art theater and films for five decades. For many years she toured with a troupe in Europe, South America and the United States regularly, with popular acclaim. Her first screen appearances were in the Yiddish films “Yiskor” (1933) and “Mirele Efros” (1939). Her other film credits include “God, Man and Devil” (1950) and her role of Benny’s mother in “The Benny Goodman Story” (1956). Her last performance was in “My Father’s Court” at the Folksbiene Playhouse in New York in 1971. She died of cancer at age 78 in New York City. (bio by: John “J-Cat” Griffith)
