Architect, Industrial designer. Professor of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1956 to 1965. Arne Jacobsen helped to introduce functionalism into Denmark in the 1930s. He gained international fame through his work in almost all areas of architecture generating a renewal both in housing, in public buildings such as town halls and schools, in factory design and as a designer of furniture. Several examples of his furniture design are on permanent exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Besides his numerous works in Denmark such as the SAS Royal Hotel and the National Bank in Copenhagen, he was the architect behind a number of famous buildings in other countries including England and Germany, for example St Catherine’s College in Oxford and the city hall in Mainz.
